Request for Proposals (RFP) issued for the management and operation of two organised mooring areas

The Malta Maritime Authority has just issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the management and operation of two organised mooring areas, namely in Xemxija Bay and in Salina Bay, for a period of five years. Such an arrangement will provide extra capacity required to handle the peaks in demand for berthing spaces for boats in excess of 4 metres during the high summer season. The concept is based on the installation of temporary facilities during summer and removal in winter.

The selected operator/s will be requested to invest in mooring infrastructure and organise the mooring areas in a configuration as approved by the Authority. The operator will also provide a range of services such as berthing assistance, provision of supplies and other related services. The selected operator/s will operate the facility for his risk and benefit whilst the Malta Maritime Authority will regulate the activities.

Commenting on this RFP, Stanley Portelli, CEO of the Malta Maritime Authority stated, "the MMA's objective is to provide the right conditions and environment for the yachting industry to grow and prosper through the maximization of our coastal and land limitations. Through such arrangements, we should be in a better position to service both the local boating community as well as visiting yachtsmen and to establish the Islands as a hub for temporary stopovers within this specific niche market."

The preview document can be downloaded from the Authority's website You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. Proposals will be received up to Friday 18th December 2009.

A Request for Proposals for the operation of a temporary marina in Kalkara will also be issued in the coming days and the Royal Malta Yacht Club has also submitted an application to develop a temporary marina in Ta'Xbiex as part of the new yacht club.
